Pratincoles and Coursers (Glareolidae)

The Glareolidae contains 5 genera and 15 species confined to the Old World, e.g., southern Europe, Asia, Africa (including Madagascar), and Australia. The pratincoles are associated with wetlands, rivers, and grasslands, whereas the coursers occur in deserts, scrub, and woodlands. Some Glareola are long-distance migrants. Pratincoles have arched bills, short legs, long pointed wings and long forked tails; the coursers long legs and shorter wings. The former nest in colonies Clutch consists of 2-4 well-camouflaged eggs in a scrape the ground or a hoofprint of grazing animal. The chicks are semiprecocious. Pratincoles hunt insect on the wing, in a swallow-like manner, often targeting swarming insects. The coursers feed on the ground, taking insects, other invertebrates, and occasionally seeds.
