Gannets and Boobies (Sulidae)

The Sulidae includes 2-3 genera and ten species of medium to large seabirds. They are distributed in fish-rich coastal waters of seas and oceans where they hunt fish and squid by plunge-diving. The boobies (Sula) occur in the tropics and subtropics, whereas the gannets (Morus) inhabit temperate regions.

All sulids have long, narrow and pointed wings and tail. Their plumage is either white with dark wingtips and tail or dark brown above with white underparts. All species nest in colonies, usually on remote islands or cliffs, in vicinity of their fishing grounds. The sulids lay 1-2 eggs, either in a rudimentary nest on the ground or a stick nest in trees. Incubation lasts 42-55 days, depending on the species.
