Lophocampa maculata occurs in mixed and deciduous forests across North America from southern Alaska to Newfoundland, and south to California, Texas and the Carolinas. One generation per year, from May to July. Adults have yellow forewings with four brown bands, often merged; the hindwings are pale yellow, translucent, unmarked. The wingspan is 35-45 mm. The caterpillars are black with 4-5 yellow or orange segments in the middle, and numerous thin white setae. They feed on leaves of poplars (Populus spp.), willows (Salix spp.), alders, basswood, birch, maples, and oaks.
