Spotted Nomad Bee (Nomada maculata)

Nomada maculata is a cuckoo bee found in North America east of the Rocky Mountains. This species frequents forest edges and woodlands, and feeds on nectar of various flowers. A wasp-like bee with long antennae, red head and thorax in females, and black in males; yellow bands on the abdomen. Length 8.5-11 mm. Active from March through June. N. maculata is a kleptoparasite laying eggs in the nests of mining bees (e.g., Andrena vicina); the larvae feed on pollen stored by the host.
