Knipolegus cyanirostris occurs in southeastern South America (southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina); southern populations migrate north in the austral winter. During breeding season, this species inhabits edges of tropical and cloud forests, including araucaria forest, and woodlands at 1,000-2,200 m; enters suburbs and villages. Size 14.5-15 cm. Sexually dimorphic. Male is glossy black, with a pale blue bill. Female is rufous-brown above, and whitish, heavily streaked, below; wings blackish with two buff wing bars; rufous rump; rectrices dusky, with cinnamon edges; blackish bill. Iris is bright red in male and orange in female. Legs are black in both sexes. Breeding reported in October-December. Nest is an open cup of moss, fungal rhizomorphs, rootlets, grass blades, and thin twigs; placed in a niche in ravine wall or road bank, or in outer tree branches, 1-3 m above the ground. Clutch 1-3 eggs. Nest parasitism by Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) was reported. K. cyanirostris feeds on insects and small spiders; it hunts by sallying into the air or gleaning from foliage or the ground.
