Grunts (Haemulidae)

Tab 3
Tab 2

The Haemulidae encompass two subfamilies, 19-23 genera and up to 137 species occurring in tropical and subtropical waters of Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans; generally at coral reefs, but also in inshore bays, and estuaries. Small to medium-sized fishes (20-75 cm) with oblong, compressed bodies and continuous dorsal fin. Many are primarily nocturnal feeders and seek shelter at the reef or in wrecks during the day. Often in large aggregations, e.g., with other grunts or unrelated fishes. They feed on a variety of marine invertebrates. The grunts are capable of emitting grunting sounds by grinding their pharyngeal teeth.
