The Holocentridae encompass two subfamilies (Holocentrinae and Myripristinae), 8 genera and ca. 90 species. They are found in tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, with the greatest diversity in the Indo-Pacific region. Most species occur at depths 1-100 m. Small to medium-sized fishes (8-60 cm) with large eyes, long dorsal fins and forked caudal fin; red or silvery. These fishes are mainly nocturnal, hiding under ledges, in crevices or caves during the day. They feed on benthic invertebrates and small fishes.
