Snappers (Lutjanidae)

The Lutjanidae are marine (rarely estuarine) fishes found in the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans; 4 subfamilies, 17 genera, and 113 species. Most species live at depths not exceeding 100 m, but others are found at ca. 450 m. Dorsal fin continuous or slightly notched; moderate to large mouth with enlarged canine teeth. Generally up to 1 m in total length, although Cubera Snapper (Lutjanus cyanopterus) may grow up to 1.6 m. The majority of snappers are predators, feeding on other fishes and crustaceans; few are plankton-feeders. This family include many valued food fishes, but some may cause ciguatera.
