Long-horned Beetles (Cerambycidae)

The Cerambycidae encompass 10 subfamilies, ca. 5,000 genera, and over 30,000 species. They are found in a variety of habitats nearly worldwide, but are most diverse in the tropics; sea level to 4,200 m. Tiny to very large beetles (3-150 mm); Titanus giganteus, one of the largest known insects, may reach 167 mm. The majority of species have extremely long antennae, often longer than the body length, and are cryptically colored. The aposematically-coloured species mimic hymenopterans. Adult beetles feed on sap, pollen, leaves, fruit, bark, and fungi. The larvae bore into and feed on dead, dying or decaying wood; sometimes on living plant tissue or roots. Most of the lifetime is spent in the larval stage (months to years); adult longevity is considerably shorter, from few days to months.
