Ebony Bugs (Thyreocoridae)

The Thyreocoridae includes two subfamilies, 12 genera and over 250 species. The family has a nearly worldwide distribution. These are small (3-6 mm) shiny black bugs with a large scutellum which covers almost the entire abdomen. Several species have spines on their tibia. These bugs are herbivorous, and feed on flowers and developing seeds. The family is poorly known, and often treated within the Cydnidae (as Thyreocorinae and Corymelaeninae).
