Siproeta stelenes occurs in Central and South America (from Mexico to northern Argentina), the Caribbean, southern Texas and tropical Florida. It inhabits edges of primary and secondary tropical rainforest and semideciduous forest, riverbanks, roadsides, orchards, and gardens; 0-1,400 m. This is a large butterfly; wingspan is 85-100 mm. The upperside is dark brown to black with brilliant green or yellow-green patches; the underside is orange-brown with olive-green patches. Adults nectar at Lantana spp. and other flowers, and obtain nutrients from rotting fruit, carrion, and bird and bat droppings. The larvae feed on several species of the Acanthaceae (e.g., Blechum, Justicia, and Ruellia spp.). S. stelenes roosts beneath leaves from late afternoon.
