Saccopteryx bilineata is found in lowlands of Central and South America: from Jalisco and Veracruz (Mexico) to Bolivia and southeastern Brazil, and also in Trinidad and Tobago; up to 500 m. This is a common insectivorous species which inhabits primary and secondary evergreen and semi-deciduous forest, and forages over streams, clearings, and forest edges. It is often seen roosting on the outside of large trees, although it also roosts in hollow trees, caves, and buildings. Males defend small harems of females. Their wing sacs emit scent when the male is hovering in front of the female or engaged in a ritualized combat with other males.
