The Vespertilionidae (also known as the Vesper Bats or Common Bats) are the largest family of Chiroptera. The family includes six subfamilies, 48 genera, and ca. 410 known species. The evening bats are found on every continent except Antarctica, and on many remote oceanic islands. They typically roost in caves, rocky crevices or hollow trees, although many species readily enter man-made structures (abandoned buildings, attics, etc.). Species native to temperate latitudes typically hibernate. Almost all species are insectivores.
