Condylura cristata is found in eastern North America, north to James Bay and Labrador, west to Manitoba, and south to southeastern Georgia and northern Florida (Map). It prefers wet, poorly drained areas, including swamps, marshes, wet meadows, and riverine habitats. This species has poorly developed eyes, and feels for prey with the fleshy appendages surrounding its snout. Star-nosed Mole has dark brown or black fur, paddle-like front feet with stout claws, and long and hairy tail. C. cristata is semiaquatic and forages in shallow underground tunnels and along the bottoms of streams and ponds. It eats aquatic insects, mollusks, earthworms, tadpoles, and small fish. Star-nosed Mole remains active in winter, and may be seen tunneling through the snow or swimming under the ice.
