Synonyms: Dianthera coccinea, Jacobinia coccinea, Justicia coccinea, Pachystachys riedeliana, Thyrsacanthus coccineus

 

 

 

Pachystachys coccinea is an evergreen shrub native to the West Indies and northern South America, including the Amazon Basin; introduced in Java. This species grows along streams in tropical moist and rain forest, but also enters plantations. It has ovate leaves and bright red tubular flowers on green-bracted terminal spikes. Up to 2 m in height.
