Pachystachys lutea is native to the Western Amazon in Peru and the Brazilian state of Acre; grown in many tropical areas. It is an evergreen shrub or subshrub reaching 90-120 cm in height. P. lutea has simple, evergreen leaves and 4-sided terminal inflorescences with overlapping golden yellow bracts. The white tubular flowers protrude from the bracts. This species is often visited by hummingbirds.
