Acer pensylvanicum is a small deciduous tree native to eastern North America (from southern Ontario and Michigan to Nova Scotia, and along the Appalachian Mountains south to northern Georgia). Striped Maple is shade-tolerant, and grows in an understory of deciduous and mixed forests. It reaches 5-10 meters in height, and up to 20 cm in trunk diameter. The fruit is a winged samara. The bark of young trees is striped, green and white, but turns brown with age.
