Ageratina altissima occurs in eastern and central North America, from the Dakotas to Nova Scotia, and south to Texas and Florida (Map). This species grows in moist and dry soils in deciduous and mixed woodlands, meadows, edges, and hedgerows; 10-1,500 m. It is a perennial herb with erect stems, growing up to 80-150 cm in height; the leaves are opposite, ovate or lanceolate, with serrated margins. The white disk florets are arranged in flat-headed panicles; the fruit is an achene; the seeds are wind-dispersed. Flowering from July to early November. A. altissima contains the toxin tremetol, poisonous to humans and grazing animals.
