Lindera benzoin is a shrub or small tree native to eastern North America, from southern Ontario and New York south to Texas and northern Florida. Common Spicebush grows in moist, rich soils, especially those with exposed limestone, along streams in deciduous forest, in uplands, margins of wetlands, etc. From sea level to 1,200 m. It reaches 5 m in height. The yellow flowers appear in early spring; the leaves, stems and flowers of this species are very aromatic. The ripe fruit is a red drupe.
