Onagraceae (Evening-Primrose)

The Onagraceae include 20-43 genera and over 700 species. The family is represented on nearly every continent, but is most diverse in western North America. Often in early successional habitats, wetlands, grasslands, etc. Annual to perennial herbs, shrubs, and rarely trees. The leaves are alternate, opposite, or whorled (rarely spiral); simple and lanceolate; sometimes toothed. The flowers are radial, with 4 sepals and 4 petals (rarely 2-7); arranged in spikes, racemes, panicles, or singly. In some genera, the sepals are as colorful as the petals. Often opening at either dawn or dusk. The fruit is a capsule, sometimes a berry, or a drupe. The seeds may have tufts of hairs or wings, and many are wind-dispersed.
