Pinus palustris is native to the coastal plain of the southeastern United States, from southeast Virginia to East Texas and central Florida. New seedlings are grass-like (grass stage). Longleaf Pine reaches a height of 30-35 m in 100-150 years, and may live up to 500 years. This species benefits from wildfires, forming open longleaf pine forests or savannas. However, longleaf pine forest has been reduced to less than 5% of its pre-settlement range.
