The Onocleaceae is a small family with 4 genera and 9 species; found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Terrestrial ferns with long to short rhizomes, creeping to ascending. The sterile fronds are long, green, deciduous, and produced early in the season; the fertile fronds are short, dark-coloured, and last through the winter. The blades are pinnatifid or pinnate. The sori are enclosed beneath hardened, inrolled leaf edges. Formerly included in the Dryopteridaceae or Polypodiaceae.
