Royal Ferns (Osmundaceae) |
The Osmundaceae is an ancient family known from the Upper Permian; it contains four to six contemporary genera and 18-25 species. These large ferns are also known as the "flowering ferns" because the large mass of the ripe sporangia (spore-bearing fronds) creates an appearance that the ferns are “in flower”.
