Alligators and Caimans (Alligatoridae)

 

The family contains 8 contemporary species arranges in four genera and two subfamilies. The true alligators (Alligatorinae; 1 genera and 2 species) occur in the southeastern United States and eastern China; the caimans (Caimaninae; 3 genera and 6 species) are found in the Neotropics, from southern Mexico to northern Argentina.
