True Crocodiles (Crocodylidae) |
The Crocodylidae includes the true crocodiles (Crocodylinae) and the false gharial (Tomistominae); 4 genera and 15-18 species overall. They occur in the tropical Americas, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Australia, and inhabit rivers, lakes, and wetlands; some species enter brackish water and saltwater. The Crocodylidae feed on fish, birds, mammals, other reptiles, crabs, mollusks, etc. Many species are threatened with extinction.
