Water Snakes, Garter Snakes, and Crayfish Snakes (Natricinae) |
The Natricinae are a subfamily of snakes in the family Colubridae. It contains 32-36 genera and ca. 200 species, including the grass snakes (Natrix), water snakes (Nerodia), and garter snakes (Thamnophis). They are found in North and Central America, Eurasia, and Africa; one species reaches Australia. The subfamily is most diverse in the western United States and Mexico. Many species are semi-aquatic and feed on fish and amphibians, although others inhabit woodlands, grasslands or arid areas and prey on small vertebrates and invertebrates.
