Felidae, Mustelidae, Procyonidae and Ursidae Seals and Sea Lions were previously classified in a order Pinnipeadea. However, recent studies showed that carnivorous mammals and pennipedes shared common ancestors, and the latter should be included in Order Carnivora. At this website, we prefer to treat Seals and Sea Lions as a separate group, for practical purposes. |
