Small to medium sized terrestrial or aquatic salamanders, distinguished from other tailed amphibian families by the lack of costal grooves along the sides of their bodies, and their rough skin. Lungs are present in both juveniles and adults. Salamandridae are restricted to Eurasia, North America, and North Africa; the family contains 21 genera and 116 species.
