Plovers and Lapwings (Charadriidae) |
The Charadriidae includes the plovers, dotterels, and lapwings, 10 genera and 65-67 species. They are distributed in open habitats throughout the world, usually near water, although some species nest in dry plains. These are small to medium-sized shorebirds with compact bodies, short, thick necks and long, wings. Members of this family lay 2-4 eggs in a shallow scrape in the ground, and incubate for 21–30 days; the chicks are precocial. They feed on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates such as insects, worms, molluscs and small crustaceans.
