Storks (Ciconiidae)

The Ciconiidae are a small family (6 genera and 19 living species) of large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds with long, stout bills. Storks occur throughout the world, with most species in tropical Asia and sub-Saharan Africa; they are absent from most of North America and of Australia, and the polar regions. Storks inhabit open grasslands, savannas, marshes, open woodlands and forests. Most storks eat frogs, fish, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other invertebrates; three species feed primarily on carrion. Their nests are large twig platform built in trees, on rock ledges, or, man-made structures; some species are colonial. Storks lay 3-6 eggs are incubated by both parents for ca. 5 weeks; the young remain in nest for 7-9 weeks. The species nesting in temperate climates are migratory.
