Loons or Divers (Gaviidae) |
This is small family of waterbirds found in northern and temperate parts of North America and Eurasia; the Gaviidae contains only one genus, Gavia, and five contemporary species. Loons are well adapted to swimming and diving; their legs are placed far back on the body and have webbed toes. All species have a strong tapered bill and thick plumage which is black or gray above and white below. Loons feed mainly on fishes, but also catch aquatic insects and crustaceans. The nest is made of aquatic vegetation and mud, usually at the water’s edge. The clutch consists of two olive-brown spotted eggs. The young are precocial.
