Jacanas (Jacanidae) |
The Jacanidae is a small family of waterbirds with 6 genera and 8 species. They are found in freshwater marshes, small lakes, and flooded fields throughout the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the Americas (including the Caribbean), Africa, Madagascar, South-East Asia, and Australia. The jacanas are medium-sized waterbirds, with colourful plumage, thin bills, and elongated legs, toes and claws, which permit walking on floating vegetation. Jacanas are polyandrous; the female mates with several males and the males build the nests, incubate, and brood the chicks. The nest is a floating platform; 3-5 eggs are laid; incubation lasts ca. 28 days; the chicks are precocious. Jacanas feed on insects, other invertebrates and seeds picked from the floating vegetation or the water surface.
