New World Quails (Odontophoridae) |
The Odontophoridae (10 genera and 34 species) are distributed from southernmost Canada to southern Brazil. The New World quails are found in lowland tropical forest, cloud forest, savanna, scrublands and deserts. These are plump birds, with short wings and legs. Although capable of short and strong flight they prefer to walk or run. Some species exhibit moderate sexual dichromatism. Members of these family are mostly monogamous, and nest on the ground. Clutches contain 3-15 eggs; incubation lasts 16-30 days depending on the species. Chicks are precocial and leave the nest shortly after hatching. The Odontophoridae feeds on berries, seeds, tubers, insects and other invertebrates. Some New World quails are popular gamebirds. Few species are threatened by habitat loss and illegal hunting.
