Osprey (Pandionidae) |
The family Pandionidae contains only one genus, Pandion, and one living species, Osprey (P. haliaetus), with a nearly cosmopolitan range. The Australian subspecies, P. h. cristatus, is treated as full species by some authorities. The Pandionidae differs from other diurnal raptors by having unique foot structure, an adaptation for grasping slippery prey: a reversible outer toe, reticulate tarsi, sharp point on soles of feet, and rounded talons.
