Flamingoes (Phoenicopteridae) |
The Phoenicopteridae are a family of large wading birds, with 3 extant genera and 6 species. Flamingos are found in the West Indies, South America, Eurasia, and Africa, but their distribution is usually restricted to brackish or saltwater lakes and lagoons. All Phoenicopteridae have thick downturned bills, long necks, large wings, long legs and short tails. They feed by filtering brine shrimp and blue-green algae while wading in shallow water. Flamingos are highly gregarious and nest in colonies, often in mudflats inaccessible to most terrestrial predators. The nest is a truncated cone built of mud. Flamingos lay 1-2 eggs, and incubate for 27-31 days. The chicks move out of their nests at 7-12 days and form créches, where they remain until fledging.
