Trogons (Trogonidae) |
The Trogonidae contains 7 genera and 39 species found in the Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and South and South-East Asia. The greatest diversity is in the Neotropics (4 genera and 24 species). The majority inhabits the mid-story of humid tropical, subtropical and cloud forests, but several species occur in dry forests and savanna. Trogons have short bills, compact bodies, long tails, and short legs and feet. Their plumage is colourful, a combination of contrasting green, red, blue, yellow or brown, often iridescent, and sexually dimorphic. They nest in cavities, excavated in rotting wood or nests of termites or other social insects. The clutch contains 2-4 eggs; incubation 16-19 days by both parents. The chicks are altricial, and fledge after 16-25 days. Trogons feed on insects, other invertebrates, and fruit; small vertebrates, including lizards and treefrogs, are taken occasionally.
