Purple Finches breed is coniferous and mixed forest in Canada and the northeastern and western USA. Northern populations are short-distance migrants wintering in the southern United States; other populations are mostly resident. This species is sexually dimorphic: adult males have red or purple on the head, breast, back and rump, whereas females have light brown upperparts, white underparts, and a whitish eyestripe.
