The Blue-naped Chlorophonia is a colourful South American species with an extensive, but disjunct range. It is found in lowlands and highlands of the northeast of the continent (Venezuela and Guyana), in the northern and central Andes, and the Atlantic Forest of the southeastern Brazil. This chlorophonia occurs in humid forest, along forest edges, but also in gardens and parks. Genus Chlorophonia was formerly included in the Thraupidae.
