Wagtails and Pipits (Motacillidae)

The Motacillidae encompasses 65 species (6 genera) or wagtails, pipits, and longclaws. The wagtails are found in Eurasia, Africa, and Alaska, whereas the pipits occur nearly worldwide. The longclaws, on the other hand, are restricted to tropical Africa. The Motacillidae occur in a variety of habitats, ranging from coasts to high mountains, although the majority of species inhabits open county, e.g., near streams and wetlands. The members of this family are small songbirds with short necks, long tails, and long toes and claws. Their plumage varies from dull brown to contrasting black, white, and yellow. Nests are built in a scrape on the ground, crevices or cavities; most species lay 5-7 eggs; incubation lasts 13-15 days, and the young leave nest in ca. two weeks. Motacillids feed on a variety of invertebrates, including insects, spiders, worms, and small aquatic molluscs.
