Conirostrum speciosum occurs in tropical South America, from Venezuela to south-eastern Brazil and northern Argentina; patchy distribution in the Amazon. This species inhabits edges of fragmented and degraded moist tropical forests, gallery forests, dry woodlands, parks, and gardens; up to 900 m. Seasonal movements reported in southern Brazil. It measures 10.5-11 cm, and weighs 8-9 g. The bill is sharp and conical. Sexually dimorphic. The male is bluish-gray above, and whitish-gray below, with a chestnut vent, and a small white speculum on the wing. The female is olive-green above and grayish-white below, with a pale bluish-gray head. Nest is hidden in tree canopy, bromeliads, and dead leaves of Cecropia spp. Chestnut-vented Conebill feeds on insects, including caterpillars, berries, and possibly nectar.
