Deadleaf Katydid (Pycnopalpa bicordata)
(Saint-Fargeau et Audinet-Serville, 1825) |
Synonyms: Pycnopalpa contaminata, Pycnopalpa morata, Pycnopalpa mortuifolia, Pycnopalpa permaculata, Phylloptera bicordata, Locusta bicordata |
Pycnopalpa bicordata ranges from eastern Mexico (Veracruz) to Ecuador and northern Argentina. This leaf-mimicking katydid inhabits forests and forest edges in tropical lowlands. Adult: the head and the abdomen are brown; the thorax is brown with a green hourglass-shaped patch composed of two heart-like spots; the forewings are brown at the base, but yellow-green overall, with 1-2 large yellowish-brownish reticulated spots suggestive of damaged leaf tissue. The nymph is mostly brown; reminiscent of a winged seed, a dipteran, or a moth, when at rest.
