Sympetrum vicinum is widespread in North America; two populations: on the West Coast (British Columbia to California) and east of the Rocky Mountains (Manitoba to Nova Scotia, and south to New Mexico and Florida). It occurs at wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving streams in forested and wooded areas. Small dragonfly, 26-35 mm in length. Reddish-brown face and thorax and red abdomen in mature males; yellow thorax and a yellowish brown abdomen in immature males; brown thorax and a brownish-red abdomen in females. Yellow legs; yellowish clouding at the base of each hindwing. This species feeds on small flying insects hunting them from perches. Adults fly from early August to early November.
