Silver-haired Bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) Le Conte, 1831 |
Silver-haired Bat is the only member of the genus Lasionycteris. It occurs in southeastern Alaska, southern Canada, the contiguous United States, northeast Mexico and Bermuda. In summer, Lasionycteris noctivagans inhabits mixed and deciduous forests, usually near water, often roosting behind loose bark, in hollow trees, and occasionally in bird nests. It hunts over forest ponds and streams, feeding on moths, beetles, and other insects. Some Silver-haired Bats remain in the northern part of their range and hibernate, but the majority migrates south.
