Tachyphonus cristatus occurs in South America, mainly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Guianas, and the Atlantic Forest region of eastern and southeastern Brazil. It inhabits canopies of tropical moist lowland forests, including terra firma, forest edges, woodlands, and savannas; below 500-600 m, but sometimes up to 1,400 m. A medium-size tanager (length ca. 15 cm; weight 19-23 g. The male is black with a distinct orange or red crest, a buff throat patch, a fulvous rump, and white underwing coverts. The female is rufous- or ochrous-brown. Reported to nest is in small trees and palms in the forest understorey. The nest is a small cup. The Flame-crested Tanager feeds on insects (including orthopterans), fruit, and seeds. Often joins mixed flocks.
