Freshwater Stingrays (Potamotrygonidae)

 

The freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygoninae) inhabit South American rivers and estuaries flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Formerly included in the Dasyatidae. 5 genera with 30-39 species. Restricted to freshwater and estuarine habitats. Primarily freshwater, but Styracura (2 species) are estuarine and marine.
