Bonefishes (Albulidae) |
The Albulidae are a small family with 3 genera and 11-13 species distributed in coastal waters of tropical and subtropical seas worldwide. They are bottom dwellers found over with sandy or silt bottoms and move into shallow waters at high tide, e.g. into mangroves; usually seen in schools. Medium-sized fishes (up to 80-100 cm in length and 8.3 kg in weight); bodies are slightly compressed and slender; conical heads with pointed overhanging snouts and a small mouth. Bonefishes feed on benthic invertebrates, including crustaceans, mollusks and worms.
