Lutjanus apodus occurs in Bermuda, Florida, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico, and throughout the Caribbean; at depths 1-50 m. Adults inhabit shallow, coastal waters, e.g., over coral reefs and rocks; juveniles in shallow rocky habitats, mangroves, and near coastal structures. Robust body with a long pointed snout; olive gray with yellow or reddish; up to 8 light bars laterally, but these are faded in large adults; a dark stripe across the eye; fins are bright yellow. Up to 79 cm in fork length though usually smaller; weight up to 10.5 kg. Schoolmaster feeds on crustaceans, including small crabs, fishes, worms, and small cephalopods. Often occurs in large schools.
