Scorpaena plumieri is found along the East Coast of the United States, in Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, along the east coast of Brazil, and also in St. Helena and Ascension Islands in the eastern Atlantic. It inhabits coral reef and rocky areas at depths 5-55 m. Robust fish up to 50 cm in length; large head with fleshy plumes over the big eyes; dorsal fin with 12 spines coated with venomous mucus; the pectoral fins are broad, fan-shaped and brightly coloured; the caudal fin is truncate. Coloration is variable, reddish-brown to dark brown with white or grey patches and mottles. Ambush predator feeding on fish and crustaceans. Considered one of the most venomous fish in the Atlantic Ocean.
