White Prickly-poppy (Argemone polyanthemos) Fedde, 1909

 

Synonyms: Argemone intermedia var. polyanthemos, Argemone mexicana var. albiflora, Argemone polyanthemos f. rosea, crested pricklypoppy

 

 

Argemone polyanthemos occurs over most of the Great Plains in the United States from South Dakota to Texas (Map). Introduced in Utah and west of the Rocky Mountains. It grows in sandy soils in prairies and pastures; 300-2,300 m. Annual or biennial herb. The stems are prickly, 40-100 cm in height. The leaves are lobed, and lack prickles on the upper surfaces. The flowers are 7-10 cm in diameter, with 4-6 crumpled white petals. A. polyanthemos blooms in late spring-early summer. The seed is a capsule. All parts of this species are toxic, and avoided by grazing mammals.
