Utricularia subulata is the most widespread species of the genus and is found in temperate and subtropical zones of eastern North America, in South America, Africa, Madagascar, and Australia. It grows in moist sand and peaty soils alongside wetlands and in pinelands in North America. Tiny carnivorous plant; annual or perennial. Leaves are minute, elongate and hidden in the wet sand. Flowers are bright yellow, two-lipped with a short, blunt, inconspicuous spur; non-opening and self-pollinating; on short wiry flower stalk (ca. 25 mm in height). The fruits are capsules.
